3 Synthetic Organic Compounds (Chemicals) have been added to the standard PWTA test. These 3 new parameters are: 1,2,3, Trichloropropane (1,2,3 TCP), Ethylene Dibromide (EDB), and 1,2,-Dibromo-3-Chloropropane (DBCP).
1,2,3, Trichloropropane (1,2,3 TCP) is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that has been used as an industrial solvent and as a cleaning and degreasing agent, and has also been found as an impurity resulting from the production of soil fumigants. TCP is currently used as a chemical intermediate in the production of other chemicals, and in the synthesis of hexafluoropropylene (used for the production of Teflon fluoropolymers). In addition, it is used as a crosslinking agent in the production of polysulfides used mainly as sealants in manufacturing applications, including double-paned windows, boat hulls and decks, printing rolls, integral aircraft fuel tanks, and aircraft bodies.
Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) was previously used as an additive to (now banned) leaded gasoline, and as a fumigant to protect against insects, pests, and nematodes before it’s use as a soil and grain fumigant was banned by EPA in 1984. EDB is currently used for the treatment of felled logs for bark beetles and termites, control of wax moths in beehives, and as an intermediate for dyes, resins, waxes, and gums. It is also used to make vinyl bromide, a precursor to some fire retardants.
1,2-Dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) was used in the past as a soil fumigant and nematocide on crops; it is no longer used except as an intermediate in chemical synthesis.
